“Seek the welfare of the city where I havesent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on itsbehalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare.” (Jeremiah 29:7, nasb).
As Christians our citizenship is inHeaven. Here we are exiles, and asexiles we are to seek the peace and welfare wherever we live to the glory ofGod.
We need to be careful in how we handle our responsibility andstewardship of the country we live, we should pray, to vote, and to be involvedin caring for others around us.
For example, in many countries leaders are elected. In the US, UK, and Canada we are responsibleto elect those who lead, therefore, we are responsible for the character ofleadership, such as Senators, those who serve us in the House ofRepresentatives, the President or Prime Minister. We are not to sit idly by and let the peopleof our country suffer because we are not concerned about politics. We are exiles here, and under God we are toseek the peace and welfare of the country where we live.
Yes, the gospel is predominate and as “gospel people,” we areto walk in good works by seeking thewelfare of our city, county, state, province, and country.
Ephesians 2:8-10, nasb, “For by grace youhave been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is thegift of God; not as a result of works, so that no onemay boast. Forwe are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which Godprepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”
(Recently my wife and I heard a message byDr. Michael Yousseff, pastor of a large church in Atlanta, on this sametheme. He is also the Director ofLeading the Way,an immigrant from Egypt, now a citizen of the US.)
